An online school (virtual school or e-school or cyber-school) teaches students entirely or primarily online or through the Internet.
Through the Hawaii Virtual Learning Network (HVLN), the Department provides standards-based, online classes for secondary students enrolled at any Hawaii public school (including charter schools) in addition to their regular classes.
According to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, a charter school advocacy group, there were an estimated 34 total charter schools in Hawaii in the 2015-2016 school year. These schools enrolled approximately 11,000 students.
Teachers shall earn 15 semester credits to reclassify to a higher classification.
