What is distance learning?

DistanceLearning is defined as a formal educational process in which all orsome of the instruction occurs when student and instructor utilize technologyto achieve the same learning outcomes as classroom courses (Face-to-FaceLearning).  Instruction may be asynchronous (learning is student-centered thatuses technology outside of the constraints of time) or synchronous (learning isstudent-centered that uses technology in unison or at the same time).  Studentlearning outcomes are consistent regardless of course delivery method. Students must have reliable access to technology required for the course.

What is St. Louis Community College?

St. Louis Community College collects and uses assessment data toimprove student learning, academic achievement, and overall institutionaleffectiveness. When combined with thoughtful interpretation by faculty andstaff, assessment supports the overall decision-making needs of the college andthe specific decision-making needs of individual units and programs.

What is the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008?

LouisCommunity College take action to address the unauthorized distribution ofcopyrighted materials, including music, video and programs. If a student usescollege technology resources to perform unauthorized distribution or sharingof such materials, the student will be in violation of college policy as well assubject to criminal and/or civil prosecution for violation of copyright and otherfederal and state laws.

What is course assessment?

In course assessment, academic faculty and administrators decide whichcourses to assess and which assessment measures to use. The goal is to gatherinformation which will allow departments to make collegewide changes incourses to increase student learning. These ongoing assessments are necessaryto sustain the credibility and transferability of courses and the programs whichrequire them.

How does campus life help students?

For informalgatherings, the campuses provide facilities such as multi-purpose meetingrooms, lounges, study areas and cafeterias.  Engaging in campus life initiativessupports students’ academic success and leadership development.

What is an academic advisor?

Academic advisors assist students in clarifying their educational goals andin developing strategies to achieve those goals. Academic advisors providestudents with information about programs of study, course requirements,and college policies and procedures. Academic plans developed by advisorsand students lead to the timely completion of degrees or certificates. Forstudents who plan to transfer, an advisor can explore with them the transferrequirements and suggest appropriate coursework; however, the responsibilityfor course selection and meeting degree and transfer requirements rests witheach student.

Does St. Louis Community College require an assessment?

Assessment may be required prior to advisement and registration. St. LouisCommunity College uses a computerized placement test. The placementtest gives essential information about prospective students' academic skillsand needs. Test results indicate whether students are college ready or will berequired to complete one or more preparatory courses in reading, writing ormathematics.
