Integration types. There are six types of Integrations available, and the data format will be slightly different depending upon the type selected. There is no limit to the number of Integrations a system may have. It is possible, although unusual, to have a variety of Integration Types on a single system.
When data is gathered from multiple data sources, conflicting data elements can occur. A policy to resolve the conflicts needs to be in place so the system knows which source to use. For example, the HRMS may ask the user for an email address. The registrar may also ask for an email address. Conflicting email addresses can occur when a user has two different roles at the institution such as student and teaching assistant, or staff and adjunct faculty. In this case, when two email addresses are different, a decision must be made as to which source has precedence.
EXTERNAL_PERSON_KEY. This element is used to identify the user internal to the database. While this key is never displayed, it should have no person identifiable data, no names, no social security numbers or birth dates. The reason is that people's data changes. Some get married, divorced, legal name changes, or change their social security number. By not including person identifiable data, you avoid any problems with changes. This key can be up to 64 characters long. Because of the risk of accidentally exposing student data to another student, this key should never be re-used. Once it is issued to a student it should not be issued again. A re-issued EXTERNAL_PERSON_KEY risks making one user's information visible to another user. Therefore, Blackboard recommends that this key be part of a very large key space. A good way to construct such a key, if you do not already have an appropriate identifier, is to generate a random 16-20 digit hexadecimal number per student. The large variability and random distribution allows the database to build a balanced index.

The Snapshot Feed File can be a "flat file," another term for a delimited text file . A Feed File may include information about any of the 10 entities that are transferred to Blackboard Learn. A Feed File consists of a header row that identifies each of the columns or fields of data followed by one or more rows of data records.
The Header Row in a Feed File contains Field Names, which are the exact names of the fields included in the file. These names are listed in the tables in the feed file topics, starting with Category Data Feed Elements. The header fields are delimited with the same character as the data records.
A "Delete Records" file will be the file format used to purge unwanted data from Blackboard Learn and may encompass information about any of the ten entities that are to be transferred to the Blackboard database. The file need only contain certain key fields to delete data records from Blackboard Learn. Compared to a flat file feed, an XML Snapshot file has increased flexibility in that the XML files can process one data type at a time, or combine multiple data types to be processed at once. While Blackboard Learn does not validate against the XML Data Dictionary defined in Data Format Tables for XML Files, the code must be well-formed, meaning each nested tag must be properly closed.
User data is the primary information set which describes who has access to Learn, their role at your institution, and their role within the Learn system. In the context of SIS data USER objects are often referred to as "PERSON" and this is reflected in existing standards. Predating many of these standards Learn uses "PERSON" and "USER" to refer to user-related records based on the context. The following examples will use "PERSON" to refer to the record and "USER" to refer to the person.
At a high level, you can apply three SIS integration data feed patterns to all User data operations, and the selection of the pattern depends on the data you are able to provide and the integration goals.
Passwords are required to log into Learn, but are not a required field in PERSON data feeds. If a password is not provided in the data feed a random SHA512 password is generated and stored in the Learn database.
Field mapping provides the ability to alter incoming data before it is stored in Learn. This allows you to have complete control over the data that is stored and enables you to meet Learn specific rules when the SIS data you are provided is insufficient, such as the creation of User passwords. When applied to a User object field the associated script is run per user, altering or providing the data before it is stored in Learn. Your SIS controls LEARN access availability for users, and your data feed indicates whether users individually have access to Learn. You want to make changes to individual user access using PERSON create/update.
