The classroom shouldn’t be limited to four walls or 49 video feeds. To meet learners and instructors where they are, the virtual classroom should be endlessly adaptable. When learning circumstances or lesson plans change, the virtual classroom should change with them
For Jacksonville University, meeting students’ educational needs is fundamental to their mission and core to their success. University leaders realized that to attract and retain students, they must offer the premier educational experience expected of a prestigious university. Therefore, Jacksonville University’s leaders sought an educational technology platform that offered flexibility, ease of use, and integration with other campus technology systems—while being straightforward enough for their small team to support reasonably and effectively.
George Brown College’s (GBC) administration is highly focused on reimagining and providing learner-centered experiences, as outlined in their Vision 2030, Strategy 2022 Plan. Consequently, a core component of the plan—the student’s digital experience— immediately became a top priority. For George Brown’s Digital Learning Environment (DLE) team, this translates into a heightened emphasis on providing students with a consistent, barrierless, and impactful digital experience—one that spans the complete student lifecycle.
Keiser University, one of Florida’s premier private higher education institutions, incorporates a “students first” philosophy into all it does, both inside and outside the classroom. So, whether Keiser’s leaders were working to enhance courses, ensure programs were achieving the right student outcomes, or positioning faculty to be in lockstep with each student’s progress, one thing was clear—Keiser needed an integrated educational technology platform that could support the depth and breadth of their efforts.
Blackboard Collaborate is an always-on, real-time, online meeting tool available in all Blackboard courses. It lets you share your audio and video, add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact. Collaborate Ultra opens right in your browser, so you don't have to install any software to join or manage a session.
Browsers and Devices. Collaborate Ultra works on computers, tablets, and phones in the browser. On computers, all major browsers now are now supported; however, Firefox and Chrome offer the best experience. On iOS devices, Safari is required. On Android devices, Chrome is required.
Students join sessions securely when they join from their course. The students are authenticated through the LMS and provided with secure session links only they can use. At the same time, instructors can use guest links to invite anyone not enrolled in their course, such as a colleague or an external expert for a Q&A session.
Students can access Collaborate sessions from directly in a course. Instructors don’t need to send invites. A course room is available for use any time. Instructors don’t have to create new sessions unless they want to. Everyone enrolled in the course automatically has access to the session and with the right level of permissions in the room.
Instructors decide what makes a student present, late, or absent. Collaborate then does the attendance tracking for them and sends the information to the course Attendance page for review and grading.
Once the session’s recording is over, it’s automatically posted in the course. Recordings of the sessions are only available to those enrolled in the course by default. Instructors can choose to grant public access and share a recording link. They can tell at-a-glance who has access to the recordings and edit the permissions any time.
Work groups inside your course can use Collaborate on their own too if you want it. Finally, give students in your courses their own private group space to meet in their group tools. These group sessions are self-organized and a great place for students to practice presenting online.
