His reputation as a philosopher, literally meaning 'a lover of wisdom', soon spread all over Athens and beyond. When told that the Oracle of Delphi had revealed to one of his friends that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens, he responded not by boasting or celebrating, but by trying to prove the Oracle wrong.

Basically, Socrates insisted on being executed because he thought that was the only choice he had if he did not want to betray his principles. He could have, for example, opted to be acquitted if he would give up his teaching, but he felt that his mission in life was to do just exactly that -- to go around teaching.
This dialogue portrays aspects of Socratic ignorance and Socratic irony while it enacts his twofold mission of exposing common arrogant pretensions and pursuing a philosophical knowledge of virtue that no one ever seems to have.

Socrates said that he must be wiser than other men only in that he knows that he knows nothing. He considered it his duty to question supposed "wise" men and to expose their false wisdom as ignorance.
Though many bystanders take Socrates to be an expert in the fields in which he questions others, Socrates denies any expertise, and interprets the oracle as saying that the wisest of men are men like Socrates who humbly accept that their wisdom is deficient.
