What does randomizing the questions do?

Randomizing the questions will reorder the questions as they are presented. This may also eliminate students from passing on questions and answers as "Question 1 - answer is B, Question 2 - answer is A, etc." Students will have different Question 1, Question 2, etc.

What is Turnitin used for?

Turnitin is known for checking the originality of papers, but it can also be used for short answer or essay type questions. Turnitin will check against online databases, webpages, and other students papers for matching content.

Can you return to the test with forced completion?

With forced completion, students cannot return to the test. Using forced completion may prevent students from reading the questions, exiting the test, looking up the answers, then returning to take the test; however, there is a larger issue with forced completion. Students often take tests using Wi-Fi. With forced completion enabled, if the students' Wi-Fi drops while they are taking the test, the faculty will have to ignore that test attempt and the student will have to take the test over from the beginning. You will then be required to ignore the test attempt for each individual student who is affected by a Wi-Fi outage.

What does it mean to save an answer on Blackboard?

Saving an answer is your way of communicating with the Blackboard server that you are still taking the exam. If the Blackboard server does not receive a save response from you, it may time out due to inactivity and lock you out of the exam.

How to go back to unanswered questions?

When backtracking is allowed by your instructor, you may go back to unanswered questions by clicking on the question number link within "Question Completion Status. ". Always click Save All Answers prior to submitting the exam to ensure that all of your answers have been saved.

How to do a timed test?

"Timed Test": Most of the time you must complete the test within a specific window of time. For timed tests, the time begins the minute you open the test, and will monitor your progress throughout the allotted time. Make certain that you submit your test before the time expires.

How far in advance should I take a practice test?

If your instructor has set up a practice test, be certain to take it at least 24 hours in advance of the actual test, both to familiarize yourself with the online testing environment as well as to troubleshoot and have time to resolve any potential computer issues before a real test.

Can you click anywhere on a test canvas?

In some cases your instructor will set the test to load questions one at a time. In other cases they will set the test to load all questions at once. Do not click anywhere outside of the test canvas (e.g. course navigational button). Clicking anywhere outside the test canvas can result in the loss of data.

Can you go back and change your answers on the test?

Once you have submitted a test, you cannot go back and change answers. If you have multiple attempts, you must retake the test completely. "Force Completion": Most of the time, you must complete the exam the first time you open it.

Can I take multiple tests at once?

"Multiple Attempts": Most of the time you will be allowed to take the exam only once, unless your professor has allowed multiple attempts.

I can't submit my test or assignment to Blackboard

Although Blackboard will work on both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (WiFi) connections, it is strongly recommended that students use a secured wired connection when taking tests or submitting assignments.

My instructor has indicated that he or she cannot locate or open a file I submitted in Blackboard. What's the problem?

There are several possibilities, depending upon how those files were submitted:

What kind of Internet connection or computer do I need to take an online course or an online exam?

Blackboard will work on both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (WiFi) connection. It is strongly recommended that students use a secured wired connection (needing a password to access) when taking tests. If taking the test on a wireless (WiFi) connection, a drop in signal may kick the student out of the test.

What kind of hardware and software do I need to use Blackboard?

Most laptops and computers manufactured within the last 5 years will be sufficient for use with Blackboard. You should not rely on a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.) to participate in online learning.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Blackboard and its features. How can I learn more about how to use it?

The course navigation within each Blackboard 9.1 course includes a "Help" link. Click on that link to access "Blackboard Help for Students." You may find additional help by searching the ITS Knowledgebase.

What is achievement tool?

The Achievements tool allows instructors and course designers to designate criteria for issuing rewards to students. The two types of Achievements, Certificates and Badges, can be issued for course completions, milestones, or other custom-designated actions.

The Retention Center is an instructor-only tool that lets you monitor students’ progress through the creation of customized rules that reflect course expectations. It is an evaluation tool that can keep track of student performance across multiple courses and can be viewed collectively in the control panel, if the instructor desires.
