Type Discussion Posts and Responses in a Word Document To check your word count in a Word document, you can simply highlight the text you wish to check, select "Tools" from the menu bar, and select "Word Count" from the menu.

The falsification of a word count may result in the failure of the paper. There is no penalization for essays which exceed the word limit by up to 5% of the imposed limit. However, if you exceed the word limit by any more than 5%, a fixed penalty of five marks will be deducted from your assessment grade.
Tables, diagrams (including associated legends), appendices, references, footnotes and endnotes, the bibliography and any bound published material are excluded from the word count.
Word counts Please note: Examiners are instructed not to read or assess any material in excess of the word limit. This means that essays containing more than 4,000 words will be compromised across all assessment criteria.
