Why use a blackboard?

Using Blackboard for Instructional Continuity. In the event of class disruption due to an emergency situation, all faculty may use a Blackboard course shell to continue student communication and classroom management.

What is a blank course shell?

A blank course shell has been created for every course and section of lecture and seminar courses. Once the administration has notified the campus of a closure, faculty who have not used Blackboard in the past will be able to log on to their blank shell in two ways:

Part I. Downloading Gradebook from Blackboard

1. Download the gradebook from Grade Center. How to Download Grade Center to Excel#N#2. Delete all columns except for the “Student ID” column and the final grade you want to upload.#N#Note: Student ID is PeopleSoft ID.

Part II. Adding leading 0

1. With the “Student ID” column selected, right click and select Format Cells.#N#2. In the Number tab > Category, click Custom.#N#3. In the Type field, delete General and enter seven 0: 0000000#N#4. Click OK. The leading zero will be added to all PSIDs.#N#5. Save the file as .CSV (Comma Delimited) for PC or CSV (Windows) for Mac.

Part III. Uploading to PeopleSoft

1. Go to http://accessuh.uh.edu and enter your CougarNet ID and Password.#N#2. Once logged in, click on the myUH/UH Self-Service icon.#N#3. On the main page, click Faculty Center.#N#4. A list of your current courses will appear. Click on the Grade Roster icon to assign grades for a particular course or section.#N#5.

Registered Students

Students that have registered for a course must follow the automated process that is in place unless a technical issue prevents the student from being loaded into the course. Add/drops occur frequently during the semester.

Adding TA (s) or Co-Instructor (s)

Adding users with instructor or support roles is done via the Blackboard Request System. Only the instructor of the course or a Bb administrator can request/add a TA or co-instructor. The requester must select one of four roles for the user:

Adding Student with Incomplete (I)

A student being requested to be added to a course for completing a course of study must have an "I" (incomplete) in the student record. Once added the student will have access to the Blackboard course for the duration of the semester.

Course Auditor

Approval to audit, or visit, a course is sometimes granted to qualified students by the dean of the college in which the course is offered. Such approval conveys only the privilege of observing and does not include submitting papers, taking tests, or participating in laboratories or field work.

Registered Students
