Lexington, Virginia, U.S. Edwin Parker "Cy" Twombly Jr. (/saɪ ˈtwɒmbli/; April 25, 1928 – July 5, 2011) was an American painter, sculptor and photographer. He belonged to the generation of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

The house paint—cans of which Twombly might well have had on hand from painting his studio—had a fluid consistency that allowed it to cover the canvas lightly and efficiently.
