Where can I Find my Trent identification number?

Blackboard (LMS - Learning Management System) Description: Blackboard Learn is a web platform for the online delivery of course content at Trent University. Blackboard is a powerful teaching and learning tool that can be used to post and access course content, complete assignments, perform online testing and manage grades.

How do I Activate my mytrent account?

Applicants. If you have applied to Trent, or have received an Offer of Admission, you can activate your MyTrent account here. You will need your Trent Identification Number provided in your application acknowledgement email. If you are unable to find your ID, you can retrieve it here OR please contact [email protected].

Online Teaching Tips

You’ve heard that Trent is moving its classroom learning to Blackboard for the rest of the term. It’s a major shift; and we want to help. For guidance on next steps please see the following guides:

Blackboard

This list provides instructors with step by step instructions to add content to their courses and communicate with their students.

Video Recording and Sharing (YuJa)

This list provides instructors with step by step instructions to record video messages or lecture segments that can be shared with students through Blackboard.

Zoom Video Conferencing

Hosting a video session (such as one on one office hours, synchronous lectures or webinars) can be accommodated using the Zoom web conferencing platform. Instructors are strongly discouraged from planning real time (synchronous) lectures at this time to allow for greater student flexibility and access.

Email Distribution Lists

Blackboard announcements are the preferred way of communicating with students, however, faculty can also communicate with their class using Email Distribution Lists

Read the Syllabus

Reading the syllabus with care is important in any class; but because the professor will likely not be verbally explaining their expectations, it is particularly important to read the syllabus of an online course. Pay close attention to the following:

Understand How Online Courses Are Organized

While online courses differ widely, they often have a common system of organization. Most online courses are organized into weekly units or modules. The modules are often released on a particular day of the week and need to be completed by the end of that week. Each module generally contains:

Make a Calendar

As you read the syllabus, have a calendar that shows all of the months in the term on hand. Academic Skills, for example, offers free, term-at-a-glance calendars that you can download or print. Make sure to note the following on your calendar:

Get Familiar with Blackboard

Your online course will have a dedicated Blackboard site, which you will access through MyTrent. Make sure that you are comfortable with Blackboard and that you know how to access materials. It is especially important that you know where to access quizzes in your course site and how to use the assignment drop-boxes to submit your work.

Check in Often

It is important to check your course Blackboard site frequently as your professor will often post new materials or assessments or make announcements about the class. You can also turn on push notifications for Blackboard, which will allow the site to alert you when your professor makes new posts and when assessments are due.

If You Are Confused, ASK!

Just because you will not meet your professor in person does not mean that you cannot ask questions. If, after reading the syllabus and course materials, you are confused about any aspect of the course, you can email your professor.
