A pastel is essentially a solid pigment that is held together by a binder. The “colored chalk” is more binder than pigment, and won't have the brilliance, depth, or nuance of pastel pigments. Make sure you choose a chalkboard that is of high quality because porous wood often soaks up a lot of paint.
