The ARDMS Ultrasound Physics Exam will have approximately 120 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within two hours. Each of the questions will have four possible answers.
Difficult but Worth the Effort It does take time to complete a program. One of the best choices is a program leading to an Associate Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. It takes two years to complete, but the degree from a CAAHEP accredited program qualifies the sonography student to take the ARDMS exams.

Each credential requires you to take and pass 2 exams: the SPI exam, and a corresponding specialty exam. You can take the 2 exams in any order, but to earn your credential, you must take your second exam and pass it within 5 years of passing the first exam. Five-Year Rule Candidates must pass the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination and the corresponding specialty examination within five years, regardless of sequence. Candidates who do not complete both examinations within five years must retake the examination previously passed.
Sonography programs require prerequisite courses that include math and science. For example, you'll need to take and pass college algebra as well as anatomy and physiology. Because of the nature of these courses, solid math and science skills are critical for program success.
