To add a Turnitin assignment, select the Assessments drop-down menu, then select Turnitin Assignment. On the assignment creation page, enter an assignment title and an optional point value for the assignment. Only alpha-numeric characters should be used when creating an assignment title.
To submit a paper to an assignment on Turnitin, the user must log in and upload a file to an existing assignment. Assignments in Turnitin cannot accept student submissions until the assignment start date and time has passed. Assignments may also reject submissions after the due date and time set by the instructor.
Select the Submit Paper button. On the paper submission page, enter the paper's title and select the author's name from the author drop-down menu of enrolled students. You can upload a file from your computer, Dropbox, or Google Drive. When you are done, select the Upload button to upload the paper.
And so this means, that instructors cannot submit a paper through University's plagiarism detection tool without the student's knowledge. You can ask your student to submit directly to the University's plagiarism detection tool but you cannot require them to do so.
Submissions for assignments are checked for originality using a website called TurnItIn. You can submit your own work to get a report on its originality before the actual submission. This is for your information only and will not affect the final submission through the assignment in the original Moodle module.
