Faculty Help Materials

This page offers two approaches to learn about Blackboard. The first lists several key tutorials to get you up to speed on using Blackboard efficiently in a wide variety of ways using various tools within Blackboard. The second path is to find resources on the specific tool you would like to learn more about.

Tasks Associated with Specific Blackboard Tools

As a learning management system, Blackboard has a wide variety of functions. However, no general use tool will be optimized for every teaching and learning activity. As a result, Northeastern provides a variety of teaching and learning tools integrated into Blackboard. Click to read more about these tools.

Learn the Teaching Tools

Instructor-facilitated and on-demand technology training for using Canvas, Zoom, Panopto, and other tools to support online teaching and learning is available. Visit the Information Technologies Training website to browse and register for these sessions.

Advance Your Online Teaching

Attend a workshop to learn best practices and strategies for teaching online, efficiently and effectively.

Streamline Your Work

What Will Change

Northeastern’s Blackboard learning management system will retire on June 30, 2021.

How ITS Can Help

Faculty and students are encouraged to log in to northeastern.blackboard.com prior to June 30, 2021, to review their courses on Blackboard and download any content, assignments, submissions, or other information they would like.

Instructors: Access to Prior Course Records

Though Blackboard will no longer be accessible, instructors will be able to request course records on an ongoing basis.

Students: Request a Student Submission Package

Students can request a student submission package at any time before or after Blackboard’s retirement. This package contains assignment submissions submitted to native Blackboard tools. Note that assignments submitted to third-party integrations (like TurnItIn) will not be available after Blackboard retirement.

Browser Support

Because Collaborate Ultra leverages modern browser technology to provide the fastest experience, faculty and staff who are sharing their screen will need to use an updated version of Firefox or Chrome and download a browser plugin.

Where to Access Blackboard Collaborate?

NU Faculty, Students: go to myNortheastern and log into Blackboard on the Self-Service tab. Once you select one of your courses, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra can be accessed under the “Tools” tab located on the left hand menu.

Alternative Web Conferencing Tools

These web conferencing tools may be helpful in specific contexts, but not all are supported by ATS.

How to Transition to Canvas

Instructors may request to teach summer 1 and full summer class sections in Canvas by contacting their department or program academic scheduler. Beginning in summer 2, Canvas will be the default system of record for all courses.

Support for Canvas Transition

As faculty adopt Canvas and design new courses for the summer or fall terms, there are many different dedicated training and support options available, including virtual and on-demand training for getting started with Canvas, more in-depth training from Canvas instructors, and personalized consultations to discuss strategies for using teaching tools.

Course Migration to Canvas

The university is offering an automated course migration service, which may be a good fit and save time for some faculty members. This premium service is best suited for content- and assignment-heavy courses in Blackboard that are organized by week or topic.

When will Blackboard be retired?

Blackboard, Northeastern’s old learning management system, will be retired on June 30, 2021. Users may want to log in and plan to secure old course content and data. Learn More.
