Just like the Word desktop program, Word for the web counts words while you type. If you don't see the word count at the bottom of the window, make sure you're in Editing view (click Edit Document > Edit in Word for the web). Click the word count to switch it off and on.

Select the information icon (i) from the right panel. The word count displays under Submission details. Alternatively a word count may also display on the bottom bar of the document viewer.

The word count gives an indication of the level of depth you are expected to go into.
Secondly, the trick to word counting is to observe your handwriting and how many words you write in a line. Then divide it with the number of words you need to write to understand how many lines you would need to reach the word count.
