Canvas, a learning management system offered by Instructure, has grown steadily since it was launched in 2012. Over 3,000 universities, grade school systems, and institutions now use the LMS.
Blackboard has not been idle during this Canvas insurrection. In an effort to stay competitive, they launched their “Open Innovation Initiative” this summer. The project gives developers access to significant aspects of their platform and Blackboard Saas to promote collaboration with new businesses. Developers can now receive a license to Blackboard Learn code for free. They will be able to work directly on the REST and LTI integrations of the platform in order assess the functionality of their business or institution before partnering with Blackboard.
One big difference is that Blackboard is more customizable. It is used by schools of all levels, government agencies, and private businesses. Canvas is intended only for education. Canvas has also always been an open-source platform, although, as we mention below, Blackboard has recently followed in this direction.
Pages, Modules, and Files are new terms to most Blackboard users. Pages are similar to Content Items and Modules are similar to Content Areas or Unit/Week Folders in Blackboard. You will need to review the organization, naming conventions, and page content within the modules for any necessary alterations or deletions. For example, the left navigation menu links from Blackboard will import to Canvas as individual Modules. You should delete unnecessary modules, such as My Grades, Student Services, Course Tools, and Blackboard Student Orientation, and you will need to revise or relocate information from others, such as Start Here and Course Information. You should also review all content for any reference to Blackboard tools, resources, or support.
Blackboard’s folder structure will appear differently in Canvas, which uses Modules for course organization. The unit/week folder structure appears to convert to Canvas in the same sequence but any text descriptions of folders and items become unique pages within a Module.
Imported quizzes may need to be edited and saved to work properly in Canvas even if you make no changes to the content.
The other LMS tools have fallen behind. One reason is they are not able to update their systems, features, toolsets in a timely manner. While other LMS providers release bug fixes and new features several times a year, schools struggle to install and implement them in a timely manner.

Blackboard Learn is well suited for institutions with moderate to complex training needs. Since it is quite costly, an institution or business that has simple training/educational needs, there are more cost effective solutions available. Blackboard Learn does not support e-commerce, so it may not be the best choice for companies that desire to sell courses online or accept payments for training. It works well for institutions of education when paired with a student information system for enrollment purposes.
Canvas is a cloud-based LMS that excels at providing core LMS features efficiently and effectively. Since both platforms are aimed at meeting the needs of sizable learning institutions, medium-to-large organizations make up the majority of the user base for each.
Canvas. If you are in a school or have a lots of students to manage. And you need to have a full curriculum represented online , to have the ability to track students' assignments and their grades, Canvas can be a great tool to use. It was easy to be onboard with their customer support.
Itʻs a good platform for certain things such as tests. Blackboard may not be the most user friendly but there is always room for improvement in any website, business, etc. When used with other platforms such as Google Classroom, Blackboard can be more effective, but when used by itself I feel it is not as impactful from a student perspective.

After we purchased an enterprise version of Zoom when COVID hit to get some of the needed features, they have now autobilled us for this coming year's service - they are claiming that we signed up for "auto-renew" and that we are now on the hook for another FULL YEAR contract for their licensed SAS.
