Blackboard: Blackboard offers many training options that range from downloadable materials to customized programs for schools. It also offers tutorials on its YouTube channel and a community forum for connecting with other users. Users can access the dedicated help site for troubleshooting and answers to other commonly-asked questions. For system administrators and developers, a dedicated site called Behind the Blackboard has support resources, software update downloads and reference materials. Blackboard also offers phone support.
Canvas: Canvas, created by Instructure, is a learning management solution created for educational institutions. Developed in 2011, Canvas was designed to better engage users in the teaching and learning processes.
Canvas: One main feature of Canvas is its use of videos as a source of collaboration and content. The Arc platform can be used with Canvas to easily upload and share videos to a digital classroom, as well as let students and instructors comment on videos to create conversations. There is also a web conferencing feature for both one-on-one and classroom learning. Other Canvas features include: 1 Outcomes – Also known as standards or competencies, Outcomes describe what a learner should be able to do, and they’re used to measure knowledge and ability. 2 MasteryPaths – MasteryPaths allows course content to automatically be released to a learner based on performance, providing differentiation to students. 3 Speedgrader™ – With the Speedgrader app for iOS and Android, teachers can preview student submissions, provide feedback and annotate homework submissions in a single frame. 4 Mastery GradeBook – Mastery GradeBook helps instructors assess the Outcomes used in Canvas courses and measure student learning for accreditation or standards-based grading. 5 Canvas Parent – Canvas Parent allows parents to engage with their children’s education by reviewing upcoming or past assignments, checking grades and receiving course announcements. 6 Canvas Polls – The Canvas Polls mobile app gauges students’ comprehension of material without “clicker” devices.
Canvas offers a 14-day free trial as well as an open-source platform. We recommend you contact Blackboard and Instructure directly for price quotes, as they can offer you quotes based on your number of learners.

Canvas: Canvas is a cloud-based platform, so implementation is shorter than an on-premise solution. As noted above, users can participate in the 14-day free trial or use Canvas as an open-source solution.
Pages, Modules, and Files are new terms to most Blackboard users. Pages are similar to Content Items and Modules are similar to Content Areas or Unit/Week Folders in Blackboard. You will need to review the organization, naming conventions, and page content within the modules for any necessary alterations or deletions. For example, the left navigation menu links from Blackboard will import to Canvas as individual Modules. You should delete unnecessary modules, such as My Grades, Student Services, Course Tools, and Blackboard Student Orientation, and you will need to revise or relocate information from others, such as Start Here and Course Information. You should also review all content for any reference to Blackboard tools, resources, or support.
Blackboard’s folder structure will appear differently in Canvas, which uses Modules for course organization. The unit/week folder structure appears to convert to Canvas in the same sequence but any text descriptions of folders and items become unique pages within a Module.
Imported quizzes may need to be edited and saved to work properly in Canvas even if you make no changes to the content.
The migration from Blackboard to Canvas is complete and courses have been migrated fall 2021 classes!
We offer a variety of training opportunities and resources to learn about Canvas.
The transfer process provides a great opportunity to think about small changes you can make to your courses so they’re more accessible and navigable for students. For example, when sharing content in a course, you should organize it using modules so students can easily follow the flow of the course and know when activities are due.
After September 1st, Blackboard will become an “archive” environment with restricted access. No classes will be taught in Blackboard for fall 2021 or beyond.

Blackboard and Canvas are the most commonly used by educational institutions. Blackboard and Canvas are online learning systems with tools that enable the addition of accessible students’ resources by faculties.
Taking a test on Blackboard depends on how it has been made available by instructors. Instructors can provide a link which you will use to access the assignment. Some provide set passwords that students should use to open the test. Once you access the test then you can do it.
What Canvas can Monitor. Instructors can also detect other student activities when using online exam portals. These activities include the number of times the student has logged in and the amount of time the student spends on the site after logging in.
Edgenuity makes sure that students don’t cheat. Instructors can proctor assessments using several embedded Edgenuity settings. This makes sure that students are doing the work themselves and are not cheating. With Edgenuity, instructors are also alerted when the assignments and tests reach the students.
After all, origins define a specific sandbox where web pages live in. As an online learning portal, Canvas can use advanced technology to detect if you have opened other pages using its page because the portal lives in its origin. Online learning portals, however, cannot detect anything about new tabs that you open or even a new browser.
In a normal assignment environment, Blackboard or Canvas cannot detect screen sharing or screenshots if a student is working on them using a normal browser. The system cannot detect what you do outside their current page. However, if proctored, Canvas can detect and prevent screen sharing or taking of screenshots.
Ideally, Canvas cannot detect if a student opened new tabs in a web browser or opened a new application or web browser during a quiz or test. However, if proctored, Canvas will monitor and prevent student’s browser activity. In such proctoring, the general interactions with the site can be viewed by professors.

Canvas is a cloud-based LMS that excels at providing core LMS features efficiently and effectively. Since both platforms are aimed at meeting the needs of sizable learning institutions, medium-to-large organizations make up the majority of the user base for each.
The other LMS tools have fallen behind. One reason is they are not able to update their systems, features, toolsets in a timely manner. While other LMS providers release bug fixes and new features several times a year, schools struggle to install and implement them in a timely manner.
Itʻs a good platform for certain things such as tests. Blackboard may not be the most user friendly but there is always room for improvement in any website, business, etc. When used with other platforms such as Google Classroom, Blackboard can be more effective, but when used by itself I feel it is not as impactful from a student perspective.
Some reviewers claim that Blackboard Learn is not cost-competitive with Canvas, but that information is not publicly available. Canvas, on the other hand, has a noticeably steep learning curve. It also lacks the depth of collaboration abilities that Blackboard Learn offers.
Blackboard is often criticized for its UI. It’s notorious for being hard to use, especially for users with less technological savvy. Some users specifically call out Blackboard Learn’s in-system content editor for being buggy and unintuitive. The interface issues also extend to the mobile application.
Canvas. If you are in a school or have a lots of students to manage. And you need to have a full curriculum represented online , to have the ability to track students' assignments and their grades, Canvas can be a great tool to use. It was easy to be onboard with their customer support.
