Is Canvas safe to use?
Canvas provides a secure environment in which to maintain or share share the university's sensitive unregulated data, as well as some—but not all—types of sensitive regulated data. All Canvas user data is stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers.
What data does Canvas collect?

Is canvas encrypted?
All of our databases are encrypted at rest with AES-256 encryption using Amazon KMS. These databases are backed up daily with a five day retention window and are configured to use auto-scaling to ensure availability. Secrets such as API keys have an additional layer of asymmetric encryption.
Can Canvas see your tabs?
Ideally, Canvas cannot detect if a student opened new tabs in a web browser or opened a new application or web browser during a quiz or test. However, if proctored, Canvas will monitor and prevent student's browser activity.
Can Canvas track your activity?
In Canvas you have options to track student activity via Course Analytics, Course Statistics, Student Analytics, and the new Analytics Beta tool. You can view your own interactions with a student, and view a summary of all student interactions in your site.
Can Canvas see if you download a file?
NOTE: The data coming from Canvas only tells us if a students has downloaded the file to their computer, device, or browser. It does not tell us if a student previews the document in Canvas.
How does Canvas process data?
Canvas uses Google Analytics to collect system analytic data, for example, what pages and objects are clicked by the user during a session, or the time spent on a certain page (“analytics data”). The analytics data collected by Google Analytics is anonymized and not used to identify any individual user.
What can professors see on Canvas quiz?
The Professor can view data about their students, like their interactions with the class page, the last time each student logged into Canvas, as well as if they are reading or watching online content.
How do I delete my student Canvas account?
If needed, accounts can be deleted by selecting the delete icon to the far right of the account options on the administrator homepage. Please note that by deleting an account, this will also delete all instructors joined to the account.
