If your piece needs to be sealed, I recommend a spray sealant, ideally in a matte finish (the flattest, un-shiny finish available) or satin in a pinch. In a real pinch, you can use good ol' hairspray.

So instead of using chalkboard paint like I did I would make my own using exterior paint and tile grout. You can find the recipe from Martha Stewart herself right here.
