The family-owned business, launched by a family of Swiss immigrants, was originally based in Mansfield, Ohio but later affiliated with both Youngstown, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The year that the Klondike Bar was first mentioned in the press, in an issue of the Youngstown Vindicator. The product, launched by the Isaly family that year, was one of many regional hits for the Ohi o dairy firm. The company was known for its regional dairy stores and restaurants, which sold sandwiches noted for their incredibly thin slices of processed ham, called “chipped chopped ham.” The book about the company’s history also touches on some fairly dark points in the firm’s history, including the suicide of Chester Isaly —who apparently felt pressured to keep his family’s regional business competitive in a dairy market that was increasingly becoming nationalized. By the 1970s, Isaly was on the ropes—but it had something the rest of the country would want.
