Usually yes. There's a certain time limit on it - going back a year later is too late but usually professors can change a grade. Whether they will or not is another matter.
To compensate, he submitted whatever grades he had before a certain day, and any grade changes necessary after that day he would fill out forms to submit to the registrar.
