SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works. SafeAssign originality reports provide detailed information about the matches found between a student's submitted paper and existing sources.
What a 100% match on SafeAssign score means. A 100 percent match in a text or passage means that the text matches a source on the database 100 percent. There is a high probability that the writer copied and pasted the work directly. There is no problem when the well-cited statements match is 100 percent.May 25, 2021
SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool that detects unoriginal content in students' papers by identifying areas of overlap between submitted assignments and existing works.
It is not possible to use SafeAssign on a Blackboard document or assignment already uploaded to a course, so instructors must decide to use SafeAssign when they first set up an assignment in Blackboard.
DirectSubmit generates SafeAssign reports on papers not uploaded to an assignment with the SafeAssign service. You can use DirectSubmit to add papers to the institutional database. Whenever possible, Blackboard advises you create assignments with the SafeAssign submission option selected.
However, it only allows students to upload once and not twice. You can check SafeAssign score before submitting the final copy by uploading the paper as a draft when allowed. If multiple attempts are allowed, you will view your originality report before final submission because each is scanned separately.Aug 19, 2021

The SafeAssign Global Reference Database is a separate database where students voluntarily submit copies of their papers to help prevent plagiarism. It is separate from each institution's internal database, where all papers are stored by each corresponding institution. Students are free to select the option to check their papers without submitting them to the Global Reference Database. Students are not required to submit papers to this database. They submit their papers voluntarily and agree not to delete papers in the future. Blackboard does not claim ownership of submitted papers.
SafeAssign officially supports English only, but the service has no technical limitations that preclude using it with other languages. The results may vary and aren't guaranteed. Blackboard has a partnership with another plagiarism vendor, TurnItIn. TurnItIn integrates with Blackboard Learn and is available for international clients or anyone who needs support for languages other than English. To learn more, see www.turnItIn.com.
SafeAssign is based on a unique text matching algorithm capable of detecting exact and inexact matching between a paper and source material. Submissions are compared against several databases: 1 Global Reference Database: Contains over 15 million papers volunteered by students from Blackboard client institutions to help prevent cross-institutional plagiarism. 2 Institutional document archives: Contains all papers submitted to SafeAssign by users in their respective institutions. 3 Internet: SafeAssign searches across the broader internet for matching text using an internal search service. 4 ProQuest ABI/Inform Journal Database: More than 3,000 publication titles, 4.5 million documents, and over 200 topical categories from the 1970s to present time and covering topics from Advertising to Women's Studies.
SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. Use SafeAssign to empower instructors to review assignment submissions for originality and create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase.
After a submission is processed, a report is generated detailing the percentage of text in the submitted paper that matches existing sources. The report shows the suspected sources for each section of the submitted paper that returns a match. Instructors can delete matching sources from the report and process it again if the paper is a continuation of a previously submitted work by the same student.
