Apply a thin, uniform coat of wood primer or undercoat to the wooden surface you wish to paint. Wait until the undercoat or primer dries (check for manufacturer guidelines to determine how much time will be required) and then apply a uniform coat of chalkboard paint in two stages; against the grain and with the grain.
When applying the chalkboard paint, you want to start in the middle of the surface you are painting, and work outward. Use a roller for large areas, and brushes for smaller areas. Pre-mixed chalkboard paint from craft stores and home improvement centers is relatively inexpensive and easy to work with. Surfaces painted with chalkboard paint aren't as smooth as actual slate or slate-substitute chalkboards; they will be rougher and not as deep black as an actual chalkboard.
Using a tack cloth or a clean, dry cloth, wipe down the surface to remove all traces of sawdust. Be gentle if using a tack cloth, as the embedded beeswax can transfer to the surface, causing the paint to eventually fail. Turn the tack cloth over frequently to a clean side.
Chalky finish paint is a color coat paint that has a soft, matte-like surface similar to soap and is often used for antiquing furniture. You cannot write on chalky finish paint with chalk.
Be sure to check for large holes, or things that need to be replaced rather than repaired. If your hood is so rusted it has structural issues, you probably want to get another one altogether. If not, continue on.
After the Rust Reformer is all dry, you can spray on the Chalk Board spray. We did one coat of Rust Reformer (one bottle), and two coats of Chalk Board (also an entire bottle - the latter went further, presumably because the Rust Reformer did a great job of priming the hood).
