Step 1: Prepare the wood

First take all stickers off the birch wood. Be sure to get all the residue off before painting. To do this, you can sand the wood with a fine grade sandpaper if necessary. Luckily, most of the wood won’t need to be sanded because it’s all ready finished.

Step 2: Paint the frame

Mix in a little bit of white paint with your favorite color to get a hue about half as light as the original color. Use a foam brush to paint the front and sides of your frame with the lightened color. Let this dry before using the stencil.

Step 3: Paint the chalkboard

For this portion, I didn’t even have to cut my backing to fit the frame, but you may have to depending on which frame you get. Sand and wipe the sheet of birchwood in preparation for the chalkboard paint. Paint one coat and let dry. Sand again and paint a second coat using a foam paint brush.

Step 4: How to make chalkboard signs

Now it’s time to put it all together. Lay your frame face down on a table and line your board backing on top. Use a pencil to trace around the edge of the sheet. This will give you the area that your wood glue will go. Use wood glue to bind the two together. Be very careful not to get glue on the chalkboard as it will leave a mark.
