Blackboards are preferable over whiteboards for drawings or designs as blackboards are better in colouring and shading. The name was changed to chalkboard in part because newer chalkboards were often green and in part to get away from using the word “black.” I doubt that many people take issue with calling a black chalkboard a blackboard, though.
