Many of the Outdoor Chalkboard DIYs I've seen use sheathing plywood and chalkboard paint. These materials aren't weatherproof and wouldn't last a season of rain/snow. Instead of plywood, I used a Hardie board. Hardie boards are cement board siding with a smooth finish and they're very durable!Jul 31, 2018
Chalk paint is water-resistant. It needs a sealer of lacquer if the surface is exposed to water. It is not waterproof and should not be used on surfaces that are in constant contact with water.
The best chalkboard, if you can afford it, is slate. It is the combination of grain consistency and durability that allows the consistent accretion of chalk on the surface of the board.
