Many boards look disappointing because the person writing hasn't given their layout anywhere near enough thought. It can be handy to plan your blackboard's layout on a piece of paper beforehand. In fact, it's one of the key steps in how to create a brilliant blackboard display.
If you find yourself asking ‘Why are my chalk pens so runny?' it's probably because cheap chalk markers can have thin, runny ink which is impossible to use neatly and cleanly.
This means only marking one side is presenting a blank side to half of your customers. Oops!
It's important to pay attention when preparing chalk board pens. Pumping the nib of pens too much results in a soaked tip , making the pen less accurate. It may even drip or leak onto your board! Having shaken the pen vertically a few times, place the nib against paper and press up and down until you see liquid chalk reach the end of the tip. When your pen has left a mark, it's time to stop.
Write slowly and consistently. Liquid chalk will dry as you work, meaning that different sections of your board will appear slightly different shades. This is perfectly normal and you should ignore it, attempting to retrace or go over wet chalk will result in running and may ruin your work! There will be plenty of time to touch up your work when it is dry.
We've all seen blackboards with a milky, dusty layer behind the text. This is often caused by bad cleaning technique. Use a specially designed blackboard cleaner to remove all text with a microfiber cloth and allow your blackboard to dry fully before storing. If it isn't completely clean, repeat with a fresh cloth.
