It also offers tutorials on its YouTube channel and a community forum for connecting with other users. Users can access the dedicated help site for troubleshooting and answers to other commonly-asked questions. For system administrators and developers, a dedicated site called Behind the Blackboard has support resources, software update downloads and reference materials. Blackboard also offers phone support.
Canvas: Canvas, created by Instructure, is a learning management solution created for educational institutions. Developed in 2011, Canvas was designed to better engage users in the teaching and learning processes.
Canvas: One main feature of Canvas is its use of videos as a source of collaboration and content. The Arc platform can be used with Canvas to easily upload and share videos to a digital classroom, as well as let students and instructors comment on videos to create conversations. There is also a web conferencing feature for both one-on-one and classroom learning. Other Canvas features include: 1 Outcomes – Also known as standards or competencies, Outcomes describe what a learner should be able to do, and they’re used to measure knowledge and ability. 2 MasteryPaths – MasteryPaths allows course content to automatically be released to a learner based on performance, providing differentiation to students. 3 Speedgrader™ – With the Speedgrader app for iOS and Android, teachers can preview student submissions, provide feedback and annotate homework submissions in a single frame. 4 Mastery GradeBook – Mastery GradeBook helps instructors assess the Outcomes used in Canvas courses and measure student learning for accreditation or standards-based grading. 5 Canvas Parent – Canvas Parent allows parents to engage with their children’s education by reviewing upcoming or past assignments, checking grades and receiving course announcements. 6 Canvas Polls – The Canvas Polls mobile app gauges students’ comprehension of material without “clicker” devices.

Blackboard Learn was the most popular learning management system for more than 20 years, before being dethroned by Canvas LMS in 2018. Blackboard is the LMS most educators are familiar with and it has helped universities like CUNY, the University of Texas at Austin, and Penn State to transform their teaching practices with digital tools for the first time.
With over 100 million active users, Blackboard Learn has been used in more than 3 million courses at colleges and universities around the world since its inception in 1999. It’s also been recognized with awards like “Best Educational Product” from PC Magazine and “Most Innovative Company” from Red Herring magazine.
Another good example of LMS is OpenEdX. This open-source LMS comes from edX — a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) provider co-founded by Harvard and MIT in 2012. Initially envisioned for delivering MOOCs to online students, OpenEdX is quickly becoming a popular system for higher education, enterprise, and government organizations alike.

It provides the platform and technology for universities to teach students worldwide, companies to train remote employees, and entrepreneurs to market their knowledge to a wide audience.
Google Classroom is a very popular learning management system in K-12 schools. It’s especially prevalent in smaller-sized K-12 schools (in districts with less than 2500 students), where it holds a 24.6% market share.
It may not be as feature-rich or robust as some of the other options on the list, but for most people who just need an LMS without all of the bells and whistles, Google Classroom is a solid LMS choice.
However, while Blackboard was indeed once a great innovator, it’s arguable whether that title still applies today. Unlike Canvas LMS, Blackboard was very slow to embrace cloud-based hosting, and despite an impressive amount of features, Blackboard continues to lose LMS market share as of the writing of this article.
Pages, Modules, and Files are new terms to most Blackboard users. Pages are similar to Content Items and Modules are similar to Content Areas or Unit/Week Folders in Blackboard. You will need to review the organization, naming conventions, and page content within the modules for any necessary alterations or deletions. For example, the left navigation menu links from Blackboard will import to Canvas as individual Modules. You should delete unnecessary modules, such as My Grades, Student Services, Course Tools, and Blackboard Student Orientation, and you will need to revise or relocate information from others, such as Start Here and Course Information. You should also review all content for any reference to Blackboard tools, resources, or support.
Blackboard’s folder structure will appear differently in Canvas, which uses Modules for course organization. The unit/week folder structure appears to convert to Canvas in the same sequence but any text descriptions of folders and items become unique pages within a Module.
Imported quizzes may need to be edited and saved to work properly in Canvas even if you make no changes to the content.

The ability for CourseArc to integrate with and deliver content directly to districts’ Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard and Schoology , as well as public access links to lessons has greatly enhanced our capacity to reach educators around the state and nation.”
Blackboard CourseSites : Blackboard is a big name in online education. It’s a great free option, but of course, since it caters to individual instructors there are limitations im posed (for example only 500mb is allowed uploaded, only 5 courses can be added).
Blackboard is the bigger player in the industry. That means you will find far more options from publishers of what is available and easy to port into the system. It will be more plug and play for your teachers and you will probably find that many of them already have “blackboard ready” content such as quiz and test banks etc.
Canvas is the up and comer. It has most of the same features, but not much more in terms of innovations. Its strength is the improved teacher UI. Porting into it can be a slightly bigger challenge than blackboard simply because the preformatted content which is canvas friendly is less available.
Desire2Learn is the innovator. They are constantly pushing the envelope and adding new features. This is both a good and difficult thing. On the one hand I have learned tons about what I might be doing from D2L. They invite client interaction with the company and push me to be innovative myself. If you like that, then they are the place for you.
