Columns can be deleted in Blackboard by opening the Grade Center and selecting the down arrow at the far right of the column. This will open a dropdown menu, and "Delete Column" should be the last option.

By default, students’ first and last names are frozen in the Grade Center, meaning they’re always visible as you scroll through the grade columns.
