One company says it would install hardi plank right to the studs over tyvek or black paper while the other company says you need to sheath the walls in osb, then use black paper prior to siding, because hardi plank isn’t really a structural material.

Even though it may not be considered necessary, many builders feel it is best to use plywood under T1 siding if the structure will be used for human habitation. All joints and seams need to occur at studs or horizontal bracing or plates to ensure there is solid backing.
Breathable wraps allow for airflow, while air barriers can help control this. With fiber cement siding, the heavy material may compress the wrap so it's extremely important that a non-woven wrap is used.
Depending on your local building authority having jurisdiction (the AHJ) over your building codes, vapor barriers are almost always required, whether your builder uses James Hardie products or some other, inferior product.Apr 16, 2021

Hardie Plank is a cement board; it's composition is sand and water. It is heavy on the wall and provides no insulation value. Formed to resemble wood, it fails to provide a deep, rich grain and does not come close to the look of wood. It is highly susceptible to mold and mildew.May 8, 2014
