The work is being offered by Twombly’s former assistant and the president of of the Cy Twombly foundation Nicola Del Roscio, as per Antiques & Fine Art Magazine. Del Roscio reportedly directly acquired the work from the artist. Christie’s would neither confirm nor deny that Del Roscio had consigned the work.

Twombly is a key member of the generation of American artists immediately following the Abstract Expressionists. Between 1967 and 1971 he produced a number of works on gray grounds. The largest in the series, this monumental painting features terse, colorless scrawls, reminiscent of chalk on a blackboard, that form no actual words.
In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
