Blackboard Learn enables educators to design and manage blended and online classes, deliver assessments and grades, and augment their systems using a voluminous library of plug-ins called Blackboard Building Blocks. Blackboard also offers collaboration tools (Blackboard Collaborate), analytics for tracking student retention, enrollment, and engagement (Blackboard Intelligence), a mass-notification system (Blackboard Connect), and a social media manager for K-12 institutions (Blackboard Social Media Manager). There's also an array of commercial content integrated into the LMS through major publishers, including Cengage Learning, Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Wiley.
Presenters can share a whiteboard, application or selected files, and attendees can virtually raise their hands at any time during a meeting. Since I last reviewed it, Blackboard has also added other useful features, including polling, breakout groups, and support for new devices, such as chromebooks.
Blackboard has also made it much easier to control the public availability of classes by providing quick access to the roster, visibility, and virtual course rooms, hosted through Blackboard Collaborate. The latter is now seamlessly integrated with Learn (more on that shortly). Advertisement.
Contextual menus are a welcome upgrade, but they aren't necessarily a game-changer for an LMS. (In fact, Absorb ($1350 Per Month at Absorb LMS) arguably does an even better job managing complex design options.) Rather, what makes Blackboard Learn compelling for large institutions is its vast repository of open content. Over the past 15 years, dozens of companies and institutions have created Building Blocks that administrators can use to augment the functionality of Blackboard Learn.
Once you invest in an LMS, institutional inertia constrains administrators from switching platforms. As the most popular educational LMS, Blackboard has benefited from that inertia. Blackboard Learn suggests, however, that the company isn't taking its dominance for granted.
