It is extremely important that you use a supported browser when using Blackboard Learn™ so that all course content and the course tools display properly and to avoid usability errors related to browser configurations. The very latest editions of Mozilla FireFox, and Google Chrome should work fine on most devices.
Blackboard Learn does not require any other browser plug-ins. To learn more about browser plug-ins, assistive technology, and other supporting software, see the Browser Support Policy topic in this section.
Mobile browsers are also supported for the Original experience. Older themes are not supported on these browsers even though users may have success using them. Blackboard App and Blackboard Instructor are supported native apps for mobile and tablet devices that interact with Blackboard Learn servers.
To build Pyramid dashboards, an NPAPI-compatible browser is required because the Pyramid builder uses the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in. Google Chrome has deprecated NPAPI support, so this browser is incompatible. Firefox or Safari users must install and configure the Silverlight plug-in to use it in their browser.
Blackboard Learn does not require any other browser plug-ins. To learn more about browser plug-ins, assistive technology, and other supporting software, see the Browser Support Policy topic in this section.
Blackboard recommends JRE versions 7 and 8 for features that depend on it. JRE version 6 might work but could result in unexpected behavior. Oracle has acknowledged some security issues with JRE version 6. Blackboard Learn does not require any other browser plug-ins.
In every release, Blackboard devotes time and resources to make Blackboard Learn run on the latest operating systems, databases, and browsers available, with the goal of creating a system that is more manageable, more stable, and more user friendly.
It is strongly recommended by Blackboard that for purposes of system management Blackboard Learn be installed on a single instance database. Oracle RAC and Microsoft SQL Server AlwaysOn are high-availability configurations from their respective vendors. If for reasons of institutional policy you must run Blackboard Learn in a RAC or AlwaysOn database configuration you may do so, but Blackboard will only support the installation at the Learn-to-database JDBC layer - not at the database layer. Issues encountered at the JDBC layer will be accepted as support incidents, and escalated and triaged according to standard Product Support procedures. Other issues encountered at the database will have to be addressed with the database vendor. If you are unable to address database issues at the database layer in these configurations, Product Support will recommend switching to a single instance database configuration for continued support.
For the best Blackboard Learn experience with your screen reader, use Chrome TM and Jaws on a Windows® system. On a Mac® use Safari® and VoiceOver. Visit the Accessibility topic to learn more about Blackboard's approach to accessible software.
Refer to the Microsoft website for more information on browser support for Microsoft Reporting Services. To view Pyramid dashboards, an HTML-5 compatible browser is required. Older versions of Internet Explorer that have been deprecated by Microsoft are not compatible for viewing Pyramid reports.
Microsoft ended active development for Internet Explorer in January 2016. Some newer features in Learn may not work, including Attendance and Create Recording. Reported issues isolated to Internet Explorer will not be resolved by Product Support. We recommend using another browser.
