Remember that once participants are in the breakout room they will not be able to see slides in the main room. You should therefore ensure instructions are replicated on any documents you provide for the activity. Apr 06, 2020 · Breakout groups allow multiple linked Collaborate sessions to happen at the same time; the online equivalent of students splitting off to work in groups in a classroom. In a breakout room, students can share their screen or files as if they were a presenter. To set up breakout groups, go to the Sharing tab at the bottom of the right-hand panel.

Once breakout rooms are open, the host or co-host can share their screen from the main session directly into all open breakout rooms. Breakout groups have their own private audio, video, whiteboard, application sharing, and chat. Any collaboration that takes place in a group is independent of the Main room (and other groups). What is said or viewed in a breakout room isn't captured in recordings.

Why can't I use breakout rooms in my Teams meeting? in your meeting controls, you must be a meeting organizer of a scheduled private meeting, a Meet Now meeting, a scheduled channel meeting, or a channel Meet Now meeting. Additionally, you need to join the meeting from a supported Teams client for Windows or macOS.
Breakout rooms can be set up prior to your meeting or seminar – you need to go into the meeting in advance to do so. Be aware that breakout rooms will expire after 24 hours, so do this within 24 hours of the actual start of the meeting (or it can be done once the meeting has started).
Breakout groups are designed for group collaboration. Every attendee in the group is a presenter. This means that all group members can share the whiteboard, files, and applications with the rest of their group.

Once you have your groups set up, just press the Start button and all participants will be sent to their groups. It takes a little bit of time for this to happen.
If you don’t have any co-moderators, the main room is a lonely place when you have started the breakout groups. What if groups get stuck and need to attract your attention? How do you know how they are getting on?
You end the break out groups by clicking on the stop groups button. This will end the break out groups and bring all the participants back into one place. It can take a little time for the breakout rooms to end but you can keep an eye on the attendee list which will show when all the participants are back.
It is not possible to record break out groups. We recommend that you stop the recording while the break out groups are in progress and restart it after you have ended them.
Have a focussed task for participants to do in the break out group and ensure participants know what they are going to do in their groups. It can be helpful for a moderator to pop in to each break out group as soon as possible to ensure that participants know what they are doing.
Provide a slide with clear written instructions when explaining the breakout task, leaving this visible in the main room for late arrivals, or participants experiencing technical difficulties. Breakout groups are an effective way to bring variety to seminars and get students collaborating. However, without proper management they can become counterproductive. This guidance provides advice for making breakout groups a success in your teaching.
Situational or scenario-based activities also work well as a breakout exercise, with participants tasked to decide a course of action from a selection of choices. Results can then be polled in the main room for further deliberation and feedback. These work best with authentic ‘real-world’ scenarios, taken from relevant case studies, in turn forming the basis for further research, follow-up activities and assignments.
Just as in a physical setting it’s important to prime discussion-based activities so that participants have something to bring with them into the breakout group. For instance, a simple ranking activity (e.g. in which four pieces of source material are ranked 1-4 by each student in order of preference) can give everyone a stake in the discussion, and make points of debate immediately apparent. Such exercises also synergise well with polling tools. Priming activities should be simple, with low barriers to entry, but provide a foundation for more complex discussions to emerge.
In theory any activity which would work in a physical setting should work in a breakout group. In practice, certain activities tend to succeed more than others. An online environment can however provide opportunities unavailable in a physical setting.
You can choose the number of groups. How many options you have depends on the number of attendees in the session. Blackboard will distribute attendees based on there being at least two in each group, so if you have four attendees you will only have the option of two groups, with two people in each.
Custom groups will take longer to set up because, unless you let participants switch groups, you or another moderator will need to drag and drop each participant into the required group. This may be okay for small numbers, but would take a lot of time with a large group.
Simply click on Group 1, Group 2 etc. in your list of groups and type the new name.
Breakout groups are temporary structures; once you end breakout groups you will lose the participant lists, the group names and anything that is being shared on screen in the group (for example, whiteboard drawings).
