What is subject specific learning?

Subject-specific learning segments of 3-5 lessons from an instructional unit will be used as evidence of a teacher candidate's ability to teach. Materials that will be included in the edTPA are video clips of instruction, lesson plans, student work samples, analysis of student learning, and reflective commentaries.

Who reviews portfolios?

Portfolios are reviewed by trained scorers. Scorers include teacher educators from programs that that are participating in edTPA, as well as other qualified teacher education faculty, clinical supervisors of student teachers, K-12 teachers, administrators, and National Board Certified Teachers.

What is edTPA?

edTPA® is a national performance-based assessment for beginning teachers. It is used to assess candidates’ classroom readiness as well as to support their development as educators.

Why do I need to complete edTPA?

edTPA is one of the measures that Towson University uses to make sure that candidates are ready for the classroom as well as to meet state and national accreditation requirements.

What does edTPA cost?

Students are charged a $300 edTPA fee, the cost of national scoring, when they register for their final internship course. TU then provides each student with a voucher code to use in lieu of payment when registering for edTPA.

Camera Use and Recording

Teacher candidates will have the opportunity to check out a camera kit through Drake Library. Teacher candidates will need a Brockport ID card and will also be required to sign a Borrowed Equipment Agreement Form. Watch this video to learn what items are included in your camera kit.

Video Recording Tips

Be careful with backlighting - do not have a bright light source in the background if the subject is in the foreground. It will be difficult to see the subject.

Transferring Video to a Computer

Students will need to transfer video files off of their video capture device.

Preparing the Video for Upload

After students have captured raw video required for video artifacts, there are several steps necessary to prepare the file for submission into the portfolio.

What is EDTPA assessment?

edTPA emphasizes effective teaching and reflective practice, thus many of the components and strategies are integrated into earlier program and Education Core courses. During the semester in which candidates complete the actual edTPA assessment (typically Internship II), implementation is guided from a unit level starting with a "Boot Camp" for candidates. This is followed by full-day seminars during which candidates are released from their Internship (dates for full-release are distributed by the edTPA coordinator).

edTPA is an external scored, program-specific assessment measuring teaching behaviors that focus on student learning. The Winthrop Educator Preparation Program uses the edTPA combined with the Internship II evaluation to meet the SC Teaching Standards 4.0.
