Instructors may use the Course Merge Tool when they want to merge enrollments of two sections of the same course (same department and catalog number) or merging different types of courses (two different departments and catalog numbers).

Important!

In order to merge courses, the instructor must be enrolled in the Child and Parent Blackboard courses as “Instructor”.

Unmerging

If you need to unmerge your Blackboard courses you will need to contact Blackboard Support by calling 804-287-6860 or email [email protected]. A Blackboard Support staff person will contact you to coordinate unmerging your Blackboard courses.

What is genius in Blackboard?

Genius makes it possible to enjoy most of the functionality offered by the Blackboard Learn Course Merge tool through the use of courses and sections. Through Courses, you can define a ‘parent’ structure that allows you to make changes to the course structure in one place, and letting those changes propagate down to the subsequent instances of the course that are created in your learning initiative.

How does genius work?

There is an important distinction there. In Genius, through the fine distinction between courses and sections, you have the benefits of a ‘parent’ structure that “merges” the sections of a single course into one structure – while still allowing you to have individual instances of that course (the sections) that learners enroll in and complete. Through the use of the Courses and Sections model included with Genius, you can: 1 Bulk transfer enrollments from one section of the course to another; 2 Have separate grade book views by section, or by the entire course. 3 Have many individual sections of a course (useful for onsite, instructor-led learning opportunities), or a single large section that combines all enrollments.

Merge courses

You can merge courses in two ways. One method is to select courses and merge them into a new parent course.

Separate courses

Separation removes a child course from a merged set of courses. The course itself is not deleted, but becomes a distinct course. The course is no longer associated with the merged set, and contains no material from its former parent course. The separated course retains both its content and enrollments from the moment it was separated out.

About multi-section management

Instructors may teach multiple sections of the same course. System administrators can merge the rosters of those courses into one master course. Merging the rosters allows the instructors teaching multiple sections to manage the content, course management, and communications tasks for all sections from one central location.

About crosslisting

Institutions commonly offer a course under multiple programs. For example, an advanced literature course might be available for credit in an English degree program as well as a journalism program. Instructors and registrars are challenged with managing student enrollment, grading, and content used in a single course.
