Since the shell provides an organizational structure for your course, you can focus your time on developing content. The course shell does not preclude or restrict your use of Blackboard tools or other University-supported tools.
There are two ways to add the course shell to your course: you can import the course shell yourself or you can request that the Online Learning Team (OLT) imports the shell on your behalf.
Adding the course shell to an existing course will not overwrite existing content in the course. You can move existing materials into the new areas created when you imported the shell. The tutorials below demonstrate several different methods:
Blackboard Learn provides several reports to help you monitor user activity in forums, groups, and content areas associated with courses. You can also view reports to see which course items are aligned with specific course standards or objectives.
When you create a course, Blackboard Learn requires only two course properties: a course name and a course ID . However, several other course properties control important aspects of courses, such as when they're available, whether guest users are permitted, and where the course appears in the course catalog.
Instead, it becomes a distinct course. The course no longer is associated with the merged set, and it contains no material from its former master course. The separated course retains both its content and enrollments from the moment it was separated out.
If Blackboard Learn doesn't recognize the file type, users can download the attached file and open it on their computers.
Course themes add a background image to the course display and change the color of the user interface, including the course menu, buttons, and controls. The theme can be changed again at any time. Applying a theme doesn't affect course content or a chosen course structure.
You may find it most useful to bulk delete course materials at the end of a course. You can select the materials you want to delete and keep the rest for use in the future. For example, you can delete students and grades from a course, but keep the content.
The Quick Setup Guide helps instructors choose elements for their courses such as a course structure and a theme. They can also edit the course name and description, and access topics and video tutorials to help them learn more about building their courses.
The course shell is a starter structure for your course. This shell is based on a set of online course design guidelines from UVM's Continuing and Distance Education and the Center For Teaching and Learning. When you import the course shell, it adds the following items to the left hand Course Menu:
When a properly-configured Blackboard course is copied to another shell, these configurations copy as desired, so these steps only need to be done one time in an initial course. Step 1: Un-publish Instructor Resources. Manually un-publish the Instructor Resources folder and items to prevent student access.
Courses are initially created in Blackboard about 4 weeks before the semester starts: After the courses are created for a given semester, new course shells will be created once per day (at approx. 4 am). For example, if a new course or course section is added to the SOC at 9am, the Bb shell will be created later that night.
1. Check the box (es) for the course (s) for which you need Blackboard shells (see Figure 4 above) 2. Click “Submit.” 3. Copy Course Materials into a New Course: Copying course materials into a new course creates a course in the system and populates it with content from a course already in the system. The course menu specified in the source course will replace the default menu in the new course.
When you copy, the course availability of the source course is applied to the destination course. If the destination course's availability is set to unavailable, but the original course is available, the destination course's availability is changed.
When you content and tools from one course to an existing course, the course menu must resolve itself in the destination course.
If the imported sections of the course include links to materials that you don't import into the destination course, the links will break in the destination course. For example, if a course area links to a test but you don't import the assessments, the link to the test will break. After importing, edit the destination course to update or remove any broken links.
