Do NOT use dustless chalk! This will not season your chalkboard correctly.Place the chalk on its side to cover the entire board more quickly and effectively.If you are covering a large area like a wall try using sidewalk chalk, it will cover the surface area more quickly and work just as well.

What kind of chalk do you use? I use regular soft pastel chalks (NO oil pastels). Brands we use a lot are Lowe & Cornell or Dick Blick studio grade house brand. They aren't too expensive, they cover and blend well, and they have brilliant colors.

Crayola Sidewalk Chalk is a molded chalk that is not intended for use on chalkboard surfaces. It does not include calcium carbonate. This product contains plaster of paris which has a gritty texture and may scratch your chalkboard.

Many of the Outdoor Chalkboard DIYs I've seen use sheathing plywood and chalkboard paint. These materials aren't weatherproof and wouldn't last a season of rain/snow. Instead of plywood, I used a Hardie board. Hardie boards are cement board siding with a smooth finish and they're very durable!Jul 31, 2018
You can make chalk marker art permanent on non-porous surfaces by sealing over the chalk marker ink using spray sealants. All you have to do is apply up to three coats of sealer over the chalk marker ink if you don't want it to be erased. Make sure you allow each coat to dry before spraying again.May 5, 2021
