The System Administrator account has full Blackboard Learn administrator privileges. This account and the root_admin account are the only two accounts that can log in until more users are created. The password for the System Administrator account is set during the installation of Blackboard Learn.
In earlier versions of Blackboard Learn, Adaptive Release privileges addressed the ability to create, edit, and delete rules of any kind. The new privileges let you control who can create, edit, and delete specific rules based on either performance or date. Roles determine what a user can and cannot do within Blackboard Learn. Administrators use roles to group privileges into sets that can be assigned to user accounts. Every user associated with a role has all of the privileges included in the role.
System roles can contain any combination of more than 1,100 privileges. A descriptive and logical Role Name makes it easier to assign the correct roles to a user. You can add more details in the Description field, but only the Role Name appears in the user management screens.
The Privileges page allows administrators to see all available privileges and the roles for which those privileges are permitted. Each privilege lists the role types and role IDs that have the privilege.
System roles control what sections in the Administrator Panel are available to different types of users. Most users have a system role of None, which means that they do not have access to the Administrator Panel.
Blackboard Learn includes more than 1,100 individual privileges. One way to make it easier to manage privileges is to create multiple system roles, each with a set of related privileges. For example, create one system role that has all of the building blocks privileges, another system role with all communities privileges, another with all course privileges, and so on. When you grant announcement privileges to a facilitator, users with this role can use announcements to post time-sensitive information critical to course success. Additional privileges allow a facilitator to edit and delete announcements, as well as view drafts.
Discussions and groups are important pieces of promoting engagement among course members. Instructors can entrust facilitators to set up discussions or groups in a course. Administrators can grant some or all of these permissions to trusted facilitators to help set up or remove groups and discussions in a course.
