In the Control panel of your Blackboard course, click on Users and Groups, then select Users.

Select the Find Users to Enroll button (do not use the search box on this page - this is to search existing users already in the course).

Option 1: If you know the Mason username, enter the NetID of the user you wish to enroll into the Username field. This is the first part of an email address. So for [email protected], enter jsmith. If you know the username, DO NOT click on Browse. Enter multiple usernames in the format of username1, username2, username3.

Select the Role for the new user. View information about Blackboard Course Roles. If adding someone as a guest, you must read this information before adding someone as a guest.

Step 5

Note: If the user is already enrolled in the course, his/her name will not appear when browsing for a user. In addition, if a student had previously enrolled and then dropped the course (or an instructor previously scheduled to teach a section), you will not be able to add them to the course.

Removing a TA (or Changing a Role)

To remove someone previously added with the above process, follow the steps 1-3 to get to the Blackboard Additions screen. Enter the student’s NetID, but choose Remove BB Access granted here.

Definitions of the Available Roles

A Teaching Assistant (TA) has the same access to all areas of a course as the instructor. If you don’t want the TA to have access to the Bb grade center, consider the course builder role, instead. Note: If a TA has authorization and access to enter grades into Banner, then they will automatically have instructor access to the Blackboard course.

What is a course role?

Course roles control access to the content and tools within a course. Each user is assigned a role for each course they participate in. For example, a user with a role of Teaching Assistant in one course can have a role of Student in another course.

Can students see private courses?

Students see private courses in their course lists, but they can't access them. Teaching Assistant. Users with the Teaching Assistant role have access to most of the course. If the course is unavailable to students, teaching assistants may still access the course.

What is the role of a grader in a course?

The Grader role has limited access to the course. Graders can assist an instructor in the creation, management, delivery, and grading of assessments and surveys. The grader may also assist an instructor with adding manual entries. If a course is unavailable to students, the course appears in the course list for a user with the role of Grader.

Instructor. Instructors have full access to the course. This role is generally assigned to the person developing, teaching, or facilitating the class. If a course is unavailable to students, users with the Instructor role may still access it. The instructor is included in the course description in the Course Catalog.
